Today, Internet is an essential part of your daily lives. We are regularly using the Internet to perform all kinds of essential daily activities. Kids get assignments from school that need to be downloaded from the Internet. Kids regularly need to access information from the Internet to complete school work. In this situation protecting your children and even unwary adults from Internet Porn and other objectionable material becomes a formidable task. With today’s busy lifestyle, parents cannot be monitoring their children’s Internet activities at all times. Even adults need protection from such sites and from sites that steal their personal and financial information, called as ‘Phishing’ sites. In this article we will talk about an easy and effective method for protecting your home from Internet Porn.
The method we will be using is called as DNS Blocking. DNS is like a phone book of the Internet. When you enter the name of a website in your browser your computer needs a corresponding phone number aka IP Address to contact the website server. To find this number, your computer contacts a server maintained by your ISP (Airtel, BSNL etc) known as the DNS. In this method we disable the ISP DNS server and re-direct all DNS requests to a trusted DNS server, which disallows Pornographic and other harmful Sites. In this example we will be using Open DNS Family Shield, which is a free service and one of the most popular DNS servers blocking Pornography and fraud Phishing sites.
Setting up your Home Network for DNS blocking consists of 3 simple steps:
- Open your Router Home Page in your browser – http://192.168.1.1
- Username: admin
- Password: (try these) admin or password or ‘Airtel customer id’
- Configure Primary and Secondary DNS server in Interface Setup -> LAN settings.
- Primary DNS Server: 18.104.22.168
- Secondary DNS Server: 22.214.171.124
- Save settings and you are done.
Now try the Open DNS Testing site – www.internetbadguys.com and it show that the Domain is blocked. In case Step 1 does not work, you may need to OFF and then ON your Router once.
The DNS blocking method is superior to many other software based methods due to several reasons. Most important, you do not need to install any software or make any configurations on a computer. In one go all your Home devices – Computer, Tablet, Laptop etc are protected, whether wired or on Wi-Fi.
In case the above instruction are not working or you need a more robust solution which cannot be bypassed, go to my next post on Advanced DNS Settings in Part II of this article.
